It’s a good idea to move and buy furnishings for your apartment at the end of the year, say in November or December. Companies always offer great end-of-year bargains, as they are keen to hit their yearly sales records
Many individuals also choose to move in December or January as the New Year brings change and many work contracts start at the beginning of the year. This might mean cheaper apartments as well as some good second-hand furniture deals.
Then after the New Year stores will also have some great clearance sales to avoid paying extra inventory taxes. You need to speak to locals and watch the local papers to figure out what stores offer quality and where you can find a good deal. Even if you don’t know Cyprus that well, most cities in the world has a discount furniture store block somewhere. You can easily spot this block by all the cheesy neon signs advertising “amazing” discounts of up to 75 percent off. Remember that these type of stores often just mark their original prices so high in order to be able to easily afford offering 50 or 75% off the marked price.
Also bear in mind that discount furniture stores often stock no-name poor quality stock which you should only consider if you only intend to use it on holiday or for a couple of years at best. If your budget is really low you could also try charity and second hand stores. This is especially useful if you are a bit of a DIY wiz, as second hand furniture often needs small repairs or a lick of paint. Some of the donation centers might even stock that they received directly from major retail chains. You get to score because the retail chain had to clear out their stock fast.
If your budget allows for it and you are looking for quality pieces of furniture, rather look at well-known or popular stores with good deals like installment payments with no interest. By paying off your furniture you can avoid spending a big sum up front and rather stretch them out for a year or two. You can only do this with a good credit record though as you will have to be approved first.
Shops also like having extra specials on holidays. Get a local calendar and make a note of the Cyprus public holidays and especially holiday weekends. You won't know if you don’t ask, so always ask for discount especially if you plant to buy more than one piece of furniture at a store. Furniture stores can often offer extra discount as they usually have a price allowance that is quite flexible.
